The country's latest telecom company under the Electricity of Vietnam, EVNTelecom is expected to have 1 million subscribers who will hopefully bring a revenue of roundly US$137.5 million in 2006.

EVN deputy general director Dinh Quang Tri, who is in charge of EVNTelecom, announced at a conference in Hanoi on March 7 that the company will conduct a test run of a mobile phone network and provide wireless telephone, telephone and inner-city telephone services.

Mr Tri further said that EVNTelecom will launch the third phase of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network with an additional 450 base transceiver stations (BTSs) to expand its switchboard's capacity to 2 million subscribers.

The company has announced that Lucent Technologies, a US telecom company, will open a representative office at the Vincom City Tower in Hanoi on March 9.

Lucent is now working with the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN)'s Telecom Company to rebuild its infrastructure to meet the demand of phone subscription in Vietnam. It will help the company develop its CDMA450 with CDMA2000 1X for a 450 MHz band in June.
