Preventing social evils and creating a healthy environment for social development are one of the key tasks mentioned in the Government report presented at the ninth session of the 11th National Assembly (NA).

According to statistics, Vietnam has approximately 13,000 prostitutes listed on police records and around 160,000 drug addicts. However, the real figures may be a lot higher.

Notably, most of the people sucked into negative social phenomena are teenagers. The number of drug addicts in their teens stands at 70 percent while the number of prostitutes is up from 12-15 percent.

One cause for increasing social evils is attributed to failure to get jobs. Many young vagabonds have become drug abusers or even prostitutes due to unemployment or their ambition to earn money at any cost.

In order to prevent social evils effectively, it is imperative to socialise the work by calling for more participation from sectors, branches and social mass organisations.

Over the past few years, the country has obtained certain results in socialising anti-social evil work thanks to anti-social evil movements such as establishing clubs for drug addicts and promoting women’s role in disseminating anti-social evil information and helping young people find steady jobs. In addition, opening vocational training centres and schools is an effective solution for curbing negative social phenomena.

In the coming time, localities throughout the country should pay more attention to anti-social evil work and consider it an important solution for creating a healthy social environment to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
