Vietnamese track-and-field athletes will compete in five international tournaments in the coming months and strive to earn one to two berths for the 2012 London Olympics this summer.

Hopefuls are sprinter Truong Thanh Hang (800m), sprinter Vu Thi Huong (100m), high jumper Duong Thi Viet Anh, three-step jumper Tran Hue Hoa and marathon runner Pham Thi Binh. Their competing results are close to the B standard set by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Thi Binh was the first to compete at a Hong Kong marathon race early this year. However, she finished 10th, far below the B standard and her result at the recent 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

Sprinter Thanh Hang is now training in Danang city and will fly to Kunming (China) in April for a one-month training session. She will then take part in the three-round Asian Grand Prix tournament in May – her first quest for a place in London this summer.

Hang will also compete in the All Stars Athletics Meet to be held in Kazakhstan from May 30 to June 1.

Meanwhile, sprinter Vu Thi Huong, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, will train in Germany in April. After that, she will return to Vietnam to prepare for the Asian Grand Prix and All Stars Athletics Meet together with her team mates Thanh Hang and Viet Anh.

International tournaments in Birmingham (the UK), Brussels (Belgium) and Lausanne (Switzerland) in June will be the last chance for these Vietnamese athletes to obtain tickets to London.
