On December 7, a team of Belgian and Vietnamese surgeons conducted a liver transplant on a 12-month-old baby at Ho Chi Minh City’s Paediatrics Hospital 2.
This is the seventh liver transplant on a child of this age that has taken place in the city. Tang Ngoc My is said to be the lightest weight baby to transplant liver so far.

Tang Ngoc My, who weighs 7.1 kg and is 64 cm in height, had undergone surgery when she was two-and-a-half months old after being diagnosed with jaundice and congenital bile duct atrophy.

However, the duct then became infected and she developed cirrhosis. Her condition was reportedly worsening before her latest operation.

The doctors decided to use a piece of liver taken from her 28-year-old mother, Nguyen Ngoc Phuong, to use in the transplant.

The hospital did not charge her family for the surgery, which would normally cost around VND250 million (US$13,500).
