Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has praised Vietnamese nationals residing abroad for their physical and spiritual contributions to the homeland, saying their contributions are of great significance.

“Overseas Vietnamese are an indispensable part of the Vietnamese nation,” Mr Dung reaffirmed during a meeting in Helsinki on September 9 with nearly 100 Vietnamese nationals representing more than 4,000 overseas Vietnamese residing in Finland.

Mr Dung informed the community about the country’s notable achievements in the past 20 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He said Vietnam is among countries of low per capita income and is steadily working harder to stand shoulder to shoulder with other countries in the world.

He expressed his hope that the overseas Vietnamese community will make further contributions to the homeland to help realise the goal of building a rich people and a strong country and lifting Vietnam out of the underdeveloped nation status.

Overseas Vietnamese representatives thanked the Party and State for creating favourable conditions for them to return and do business in the homeland. They expressed their admiration for the encouraging results of the Renewal process and wished to make further contributions to the homeland.

Mr Dung has been in Finland for the sixth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) which began on September 10.
