US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for ‘his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples’, according to the Nobel Committee.

He has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since he took office in January.

The laureate, chosen by a five-member committee, wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10 million Swedish kronor (US$1.4million).

The awards ceremony will be held in Oslo, Norway, on December 10.
