The US City of Chicago looks forward to boosting relations with Vietnam and welcoming more high-ranking Vietnamese leaders, and wishes that Vietnam would soon open consulates in US localities.

The Chicago Mayor emphasized this at a reception for Deputy Prime Minster and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem on March 14 who is currently on an official visit to the US.

During his stop-over in Chicago, Mr Khiem received a group of big entrepreneurs in the US’s mid-western region and representatives of leading business companies operating in the city, visited the University of Chicago and addressed the Chicago Council.

Representatives of these groups said they consider Vietnam a potential market and want to invest in the country.

Chicago Merchantile Exchange (CME) leaders expressed willingness to cooperate with Vietnam in expertise training and promised to study a possible listing of Vietnamese shares on CME.

Boeing and Motorola officials confirmed their determination to increase investment cooperation with Vietnam in a wide range of areas.

Meanwhile, leaders from the University of Chicago discussed the possibility of making an educational cooperation programme and expressed willingness to receive Vietnamese students at the university.

Mr Khiem highly valued US business people’s interest in the Vietnamese market and affirmed the country’s open policy which offers favourable conditions for US companies to invest in Vietnam.

Addressing the Chicago Council, Mr Khiem recalled lessons drawn from Vietnam-US relations in the past and said bilateral ties have been fully normalised and are entering a new stage of development. He proposed that the two sides further boost their cooperation, particularly in economics, trade, science, education and training.

Later in the day, Mr Khiem and his entourage left for Washington D.C. to continue his visit of the US.
