The police force should continue its mission of ensuring social security, protecting the Party, State, people, and socialism, says Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Mr Trong made the request at the 67th National Congress of the Police Force in Hanoi on December 19.

The Party chief highlighted the police force’s achievements in 2011, which he said contributed to national development and defence.

In the new context, the People’s Police has upheld its key role in ensuring political stability and security, as well as protecting the country’s important political events such as the 11th National Party Congress, and the elections to the 13th National Assembly and the 2011-2016 People’s Councils, he said.

The police have effectively prevented and combated crimes, especially serious crimes, and achieved support from the public.

General Secretary Trong also asked the delegates at the congress to identify and remedy any shortcomings in the police force’s operations, especially analyzing, forecasting, and providing strategic counsel.

The police force should continue upholding its key role in making recommendations to the Party and State to protect the nation’s interests and promote socio-economic development, he said, adding that it is necessary for the police to take the initiative to detect, prevent and repel all subversive schemes by hostile forces in order to protect national security.

The Party leader urged the People’s Police to boost communications to help their staff and people enhance their vigilance against the “peaceful evolution” by hostile forces.

He also emphasised the need to reinforce Party building, sharpen the leadership of Party committees, and safeguard the Party’s absolute leadership over the operations of the force.

The two-day congress is focusing on reviewing the “Emulation for National Security” and the police force’s mission in 2011 and devising directions for 2012.
