Most delegates to a conference held by the Environmental Protection Department and Tram Chim National Park in southern Dong Thap province on September 6 agreed that the park could join the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Located in Tam Nong district, the park has met eight out of nine criteria set by the Convention.

The park is the only wetland in Indochina with a wide range of soils and the Red-headed crane being protected by international organizations. It has 32 valuable species of birds, of which 12 are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book. The reserve is also home to 191 species of plants and 101 fishes.

The park’s officials said they are determined to make the park the third “Ramsar” establishment in Vietnam so that they can better protect the biodiversity of the wetland in Dong Thap, which is typical to the Mekong River Delta in terms of geomorphology, scenery, and ecology and is relatively intact.

Given sufficient domestic and foreign investment, the park is excepted to increase its income from tourism activities while preserving its special cultural values and contribution to local sustainable development.
