More than 300,000 Khmer ethnic people in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh will welcome their New Year festival - Chol Chnam Thmay - which will last from April 14-16.

In recent years, the lives of Khmer people have significantly improved. More than 3,330 Khmer have moved into new houses.

Since May 1992, Tra Vinh has implemented more than 500 infrastructure projects funded through Government programmes. The province has also used VND76 billion from the state budget to build 13,182 houses for poor Khmer households and provide 5,500 families with two cows each.

The State has poured VND43 billion into Tra Vinh to help build 88 water supply stations and 2,380 water tanks. As a result, more than 87 percent of all Khmer families now have access to safe water.
Furthermore, nearly VND140 billion has been earmarked to help more than 20,000 Khmer people get access to power.

The province has also invested more than VND4 billion in building the Khmer ethnic cultural museum and upgrading historical and cultural sites.

Tra Vinh now has six boarding schools with more than 1,200 Khmer students. It is the second Mekong Delta province that has a large Khmer population.
