The Olympic taekwondo team will fly to Beijing on August 15 in the hope of winning more medals for the country.

Nguyen Van Hung, who will compete in the men’s under-80kg category, is the most experienced athlete having participated in the last Olympics in Athens, where he failed to bring home a medal.

Hung will be up against 16 other fighters in his weight category. His main rivals will come from China, the Republic of Korea and France.

Meanwhile, Hung’s teammates Nguyen Thi Hoai and Tran Thi Ngoc Truc are also expected to perform well in their first Olympics Games.

Southeast Asian Games defending champion Thu will compete in the women’s 57kg category while Truc, the winner of the 2006 world junior championship, will fight in the women’s 49kg.

The Taekwondo team will start their competition on August 20 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium.
