The Republic of Korea (RoK) will receive 15,000 Vietnamese guest workers in 2008 through an employment permit system (EPS), representing a year-on-year increase of 27 percent.
Since 2004 the RoK’s Ministry of Labour and Vietnam’s Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have implemented the EPS, providing guest workers with almost the same rights as native workers.

Surveys showed that the average monthly wage earned by a Vietnamese worker in the RoK is over US$1,000 and can increase to US$1,500-1,700 per month including overtime payment.

The EPS condition that allows re-entry to the country after contract termination has helped reduce the number of guest workers, including those from Vietnam, that escape or quit working and stay illegally in the RoK. At present, the rate of illegal stay of Vietnamese workers accounts for only one percent, much lower than the previous figure of 10 percent.

The current number of Vietnamese working in the RoK under the EPS is 27,000, which places Vietnam in the top ten countries sending labourers to the market. Vietnamese workers are considered diligent, skilful and hardworking by their RoK employers, according to Deputy Head of the Bureau of Administration on Overseas Workers Dao Cong Hai.
