Twenty-six Vietnamese chess players will attend the Chess Champions region 3.3 of the world’s qualifying round from January 10-19 on Phu Quoc Island, southern Kien Giang province.

As only the men’s champion and runner-up and the women’s champion have tickets to go into the world finals, the regional champions are considered well competitive. Even the world great master, Dao Thien Hai, who just won a silver medal at ASIAD 15 is not sure to enter the world finals this time.

Vietnam
’s male chess players will have to compete with strong rivals such as Utut Adinato from Indonesia and Mark Paragua, Rogelio Jr Antonio, and Eugenio Torre from the Philippines.

Though Vietnam aims for one ticket to the world finals, it will be not easy for Vietnamese players of Dao Thien Hai, Nguyen Anh Dung, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Quang Liem.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s female chess players, including such world great masters as Nguyen Thi Thanh An, Le Kieu Thien Kim and Hoang Bao Tram, are very hopeful.
