Vietnam will propose that Great Mekong Subregion GMS countries focus on bird flu control and border quarantine in their agricultural co-operation programmes, said a senior official.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said he will raise proposals at an upcoming meeting of the regional agricultural task group, scheduled to take place in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on February 15.

Vietnam's proposals will include more joint projects on science and technology, high-tech agriculture, improvement in farm produce quality, environmental protection for sustainable development, poverty reduction and food security for the poor.

The GMS consists of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and the Yunnan province of China, covering 2.3 million sq.km and boasting a population of 260 million. The region is considered to have high potential for economic development, especially agriculture.
