Chinese President Hu Jintao will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on May 7 and have an audience with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko during his upcoming visit to Japan in early May, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on April 22.

President Hu's five-day visit from May 6 will be the first by a Chinese president to Japan since the 1998 visit by former President Jiang Zemin.


It was hoped the focus of the trip would be on strengthen bilateral ties, according to the Kyodo News.


President Hu will travel to Osaka and other places in the Kansai area in western Japan on May 9 before departing on the afternoon of May 10.
