The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) and the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations’ Affairs hosted a meeting in Hanoi on January 29 for the international community to celebrate Vietnam’s traditional Lunar New Year Festival.
State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan thanked the diplomatic corps, international organisations and NGOs for their effective assistance to Vietnam over the past year and wished them a happy new year.

VUFO President Vu Xuan Hong reviewed major activities of Vietnam’s people-to-people diplomacy in 2007, saying that foreign NGOs provided more than US$250 million in aid to Vietnam, up 40 percent over 2006, helping heal the war wounds and develop healthcare and education services in the country. He expressed his hope that Vietnam will continue to receive assistance from the international community in 2008.

Chilean Ambassador Jorge Canelas expressed his joy at Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements in 2007. Meanwhile, Trine Glue, co-Director of the NGO Data Centre in Vietnam, said that in 2008 foreign NGOs would continue contribute to poverty reduction and settlement of social issues in Vietnam.
