Striker Phan Thanh Binh scored the only goal for Vietnam to defeat Singapore in the opening match of the Smartdoor Cup at My Dinh stadium in Hanoi on November 5.

Binh’s goal came in the 36th minute after a pass from halfback Nguyen Trong Hoang went between a Singapore defender’s feet. He immediately drove it into the left corner of the goalmouth to the dismay of keeper Hyrunizam Juma’at.

Vietnam then had at least half a dozen chances during the match but failed to score more goals.

Apart from Binh, Captain Nguyen Thanh Luong, forward Hoang Dinh Tung and halfback Nguyen Trong Hoang’s goal shots were either blocked or wide off target.

The hosts will play with China, who drew 2-2 against Thailand in the earlier match of the tournament.

The Smartdoor Cup is considered a warm up for the Southeast Asian Games in Laos next month.
