Foreign investment attraction will give fresh impetus to Vietnam’s economic restructuring and create a competitive business environment in the country.

Bui Quang Vinh, Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI), made the statement at a workshop in Hanoi on March 15 to discuss solutions to improve the quality of foreign investment inflows to Vietnam.

Mr Vinh emphasized that the foreign-invested sector will play a key role in restructuring the national economy in the future. It will help create businesses that can use high and environmentally-friendly technology and have good management experience in order to put out products competitive in both Vietnam and abroad.

Participants at the workshop said that over the past 25 years, foreign investment activities in Vietnam have helped develop the national economy and support the country’s international integration process.

However, they said, there remain limitations, such as a lack of investments in the hi-tech area, the use of obsolete technology, environmental pollution, poor infrastructure and inconsistent investment policies, and the shortage of high quality human resources.

Delegates assessed the real situation of foreign investment in Vietnam and worked out orientations and solutions to improve foreign investment inflows in the coming years in accordance with the country’s socio-economic development strategy till 2020.
