A ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Hanoi on March 14 to mark the 55th anniversary of Vietnam’s film industry (March 15, 1953 – March 15, 2008).

Vietnam’s Cinematography Department Head Lai Van Sinh delivered the opening speech reviewing the country cinematic achievements in the past 55 years. Despite coping with many difficulties in the past two resistance wars and through the doi moi (renewal) process, Vietnam’s film industry is developing and gaining worldwide recognition.

For his part, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh expressed his hope that Vietnamese filmmakers will exert themselves on more artistic works which better reflect both positive and negative issues in contemporary society.

Also at the ceremony, eleven outstanding artists were honoured for their significant contributions to the development of the film industry.
