More than VND149 billion has been raised to help the poor and Agent Orange victims celebrate the traditional Lunar New Year Festival (Tet) in a campaign launched by the Vietnam Red Cross (VRC), said VRC President Tran Ngoc Tang.

The association has presented Tet gifts, worth VND622.5 million to nearly 1,250 families in 15 provinces and has provided more than VND1.9 billion to 25 poor provinces with a large number of AO victims.

Local VRC chapters have also assisted the poor with more than VND95 billion and natural calamity victims with VND36 billion.

The National Poverty Alleviation Programme and the Fund for the Poor claimed to have provided housing for about 100,000 poor families in 2007. Almost all new houses were given to the poor before Tet.

There are plans afoot to build more houses for the poor in many localities this year.
