ACMECS nations seek to bolster tourism cooperation

(VOV) - To further enhance cooperation among ACMECS nations, there should be breakthroughs in connecting products, harmonise standards and services and reform formalities to establish a single travel area under the motto “ACMECS: Five Nations – One Destination”.

This view was shared by ministers and four leaders from HCM City, Phnom Penh, Yangon and Vientiane at the Ministerial Retreat Meeting on Ayeyarwady – Chao Phraya –Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Tourism Cooperation in HCM City on September 10.

During the talks, municipal leaders discussed the cooperative results, shortcomings and solutions to improve the efficiency of tourism cooperation towards the goal of “Five countries – One destination”.

Ministers and leaders agreed that after one year of carrying out the joint statement on ACMECS tourism cooperation, travel operators have actively cooperated and offered incentives at international tourism fairs held in each nation.

They have worked together on surveys and delegation exchange and seminars to introduce potential markets. The tourism sector of each nation also proposed measures to remove hindrances to facilitate people’s travel.

Especially, Cambodia and Thailand have recently applied visa exemption for ACMECS citizens and opened more air routes and direct flights.

Ministers also proposed the governments speed up the implementation of initiatives to boost tourism and narrow development gap between ACMECS and ASEAN nations, towards the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015.
