The Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIPF) has presented 1,680 Protec helmets to pupils and teachers at the Hoang Dieu Primary School in Hanoi.
This was the second time the Hoang Dieu School has received the donated helmets. It is also the 15th school in Vietnam that has been given helmets by AIPF under the “Helmets for Kids” Programme.
Since the programme started in 2001, more than 350,000 helmets have been presented to primary pupils in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.
At present, only 3-5 percent of Vietnamese children wear helmets when sitting on motorbikes, said AIPF President Greig Craft.
Jean-Marc Olive, a World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Vietnam, said that wearing helmets in a right way does not affect children’s health. It also helps reduce 79 percent of head injuries among children annually, he added.
