Export turnover of the northern port city of Hai Phong is expected to pass the US$1-billion mark for the first time in 2006, a 24.8 percent increase over 2005.

The city set out a target of earning US$1.2 billion from exports in 2007, up 18 percent from 2006.

The number of enterprises in Hai Phong producing goods for export increased by 20 percent in 2006, most of them focused on staples which are the city’s advantage, such as aquatic products, garments, footwear, shipbuilding, steel structure, chemicals, construction materials, arts and crafts, and electric cable.

The non-state sector in the city accounted for 73 percent of its export revenue. Most of the state sector’s income came from the engineering and shipbuilding industries.
