This statement was made by National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to Con Dao district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on April 24-25.

During his stay in Con Dao, NA Chairman Trong and his entourage offered incense and flowers at Con Dao historic relics and worked with district leaders on its socio-economic development.

The delegation offered incense at the Hang Duong cemetery in tribute to tens of thousands of revolutionary fighters and patriots who laid down their lives during the struggle for national liberation. They buried incense at the graves of Le Hong Phong, Vo Thi Sau, and Nguyen An Ninh, historic witnesses of undaunted and patriotic spirit for national independence and freedom. They also visited other historic relics and Con Dao prison where many Communist Party members and leaders, such as Ngo Gia Tu, Nguyen Van Cu, Ton Duc Thang, Le Hong Phong, Pham Van Dong, Ha Huy Giap, Le Duan, Pham Hung, Le Duc Tho and Nguyen Van Linh were held.

Con Dao has made considerable achievements with its annual GDP increasing by 15 percent and annual per capita income hitting nearly US$1,000 in 2009. By the end of 2009, the district had no poor household and district leaders proposed the Government list Con Dao in Vietnam’s coastal economic system by 2020 and issue incentives for investment and key projects.

NA chairman Trong acknowledged Con Dao’s achievements but said that the district has not yet made a breakthrough. “Ba Ria-Vung Tau must preserve historic relics which are national treasures from older generations,” Mr Trong said.

Mr Trong agreed with the district’s orientations for socio-economic development and urged Con Dao to increase investment in key projects. He said that, after the visit, the delegation will present local opinions to relevant agencies to help the district develop in line with its traditions.

On the occasion, Mr Trong held talks with officials and soldiers of the Con Dao district Military Command and presented gifts to families under social policy and those who had made contributions to the revolution.
