A delegation of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) arrived in Beijing on June 11 to attend talks with the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS).

The historic meeting is the first dialogue between SEF and ARATS after nine years of suspension.

The resumption of the talks was agreed at a meeting in Beijing in May between General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Hu Jintao and Kuomintang Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung.

SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kun, who heads the 19-member delegation, was scheduled to meet ARATS Chairman Chen Yunlin on June 12.

Both sides will then hold consultations on cross-Strait weekend charted flights and mainland tourists' traveling to Taiwan.

Before his departure, Chairman Chiang said he felt the great responsibility of the talks.

The delegation will leave Beijing for Taiwan on June 14.
