Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praising Vietnam’s issuance of the UN Resolution to improve road safety globally, as well as its successful implementation of Resolution 32 on urgent measures to reduce traffic accidents and congestion.

In his letter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, raised concerns that while most Vietnamese adults now wear helmets, many Vietnamese children do not as the helmet law is not compulsory for children under 14 years old.

Greig Craft, President of the Asian Injury Prevention Foundation, said that children should wear helmets. Wearing helmets is like vaccinating children to protect them. Rumors that say wearing helmets may damage the neck and head, are wrong and irresponsible. There is no evidence for these rumors. Scientific research and medical surveys demonstrate that wearing helmets can save children in traffic accidents, he added.

According to Jean Marc Oliver from the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam, parents should take the responsibility and ensure that their children wear a suitable helmet while traveling on the road.
