The year 2006 closed with both happiness and sadness in the sports sector. Despite the shadow of negative phenomena, the sector has made a big leap in the regional and international integration process with shining gold medals bagged by athletes.

Following is the top ten sports events selected by VOV.
1. The National Assembly approved the Law on Sports and Physical Training at its 10th session on November 21, 2006, marking the legalisation of sports and physical training activities in Vietnam. The 9-chapter and 79-article law, which separates physical training activities from sports, will take effect on July 1, 2007.

2. Although sports lottery is not mentioned in the law, the sector is making preparations for regulations on football betting to prevent illegal betting activities and the foreign currency drain estimated at US$1 billion a year.

3. The largest-ever Vietnamese sports delegation participated in the 15th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Doha, Qatar, from December 1-12, 2006. The 354-member delegation, including 247 athletes, competed in 25 events at the games. However, Vietnamese athletes failed to secure 15th place in the medal tally after having won only three gold medals instead of five as expected. Most Vietnamese hopefuls competed below their capacity.

ASIAD 15 also marked the spectacular performance of Vietnamese Sepak Takraw girls, who defeated their Thai rivals known as the sole leading Asian team for years to bag two golds and a silver medal. Karate artist Vu Thi Nguyet Anh also added another shining gold medal in the women’s kumite event to the Vietnamese delegation’s tally.

5. The fifth National Sports and Physical Training Festival took place after more than a year of grassroots competitions in all 64 cities and provinces across the country. Many national records were set up in such events as swimming, shooting and track-and-field. Hanoi topped the medal tally for the second consecutive time with 145 gold, 112 silver and 81 bronze medals.

6. Dong Tam Long An Enamelled Tiles football club won the trophy of the National Football Championships (V-League) which saw tough competitions from beginning to end. V-League 2006 was featured by more draws, less goals and short scoring margins among leading clubs. For the first time, the titles “The Gold Whistle” and “The Gold Flag” were presented to the best referee and sideline referee.

7. Vietnam won the bid to host the third Asian Indoor Games in 2009. The country also decided to bid for hosting the 18th Asian Games in 2018.

8. Vietnam topped the medal tally of the 13th ASEAN Students Sports Festival held in Hanoi for the first time with 74 gold medals. However, the festival did not live up to Vietnamese students’ expectations as most gold medals were carried off by national athletes who had just returned from ASIAD 15 in Qatar.

9. For the first time the Vietnam Television had to pay a copyright fee worth US$20,000 for an organiser to broadcast live matches of a friendly tournament with the participation of the national football squad. Although the two sides reached a compromise minutes before the tourney kicked off, the issue of broadcasting copyrights once again became a pressing issue.

10. The sports sector faced an alleged scandal at the National Sports Centre No 1 in Hanoi before many national teams prepared to leave for ASIAD 15. Vice director of the centre Nguyen Manh Hung sued the directorate for wrong doings regarding financial principles, democratic practice and law violations. However, inspection results by the Sports and Physical Training Committee showed that most alleged charges were incorrect.
