There is no reason for the US Congress not to ratify the bill on Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Vietnam in the coming months, US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael W. Marine said on September 20.

Speaking to more than 300 representatives from departments, agencies, universities and businesses in Ho Chi Minh City about present and future Vietnam-US bilateral relations, the Ambassador said that the most important requirement in building the relationship between the two countries is mutual understanding.

In a speech at the meeting, which was held by the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations and the US Diplomatic Mission in Vietnam, the Ambassador summed up the main events involving Vietnam and the US over the last 15 months.

He referred to significant achievements in their bilateral trade cooperation as well as cooperation involving healthcare, information exchange dialogues, assistance to people with disabilities, resolving issues related to bombs and mines and seeking the missing in action, and cultural and educational exchange activities.

Ambassador Marine said Vietnam has made increasingly important contributions to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other multilateral forums.

He also said he believes that Vietnam will fulfill the international community's expectation in playing a more significant role in the region and worldwide.
