The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will closely cooperate with Vietnam in devising policies on education quality, gender equality and the teaching of Vietnamese and ethnic minority languages from pre-school to junior secondary education levels, according to a UNICEF official.

Noala Skinner, Head of UNICEF's education division in Vietnam, made the affirmation at a meeting in Hanoi on December 4 to review one year of the 2006-2010 period of cooperation between Vietnam and UNICEF in early childhood education.

At the meeting, donors acknowledged the results of the cooperation project and committed to financing future activities of the Vietnam-UNICEF educational cooperation programme.

Ms Skinner said in 2007, priority will be given to research on the practicing of the mother tongue and bilingual education at an early age, and a national pre-school education scheme.

During the 2006-2010 period, three major projects, including an early childhood development project and a project to boost the development and participation of adolescents, are designed to help children and adolescents benefit from equal, effective and quality education and make best use of their potential.

These projects are also intended to raise public awareness and urge people from all walks of life to achieve the targets.
