The media play an important role in the fight against corruption, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said on December 17.

The Deputy PM, who is also deputy head of the National Steering Committee for Corruption Prevention and Control, made the statement at the Committee’s meeting in Hanoi with leaders from media organisations nationwide.

He said that the media help increase public awareness of laws and encourage people to abide by laws, as well as making them better aware of the need to drive back corruption.

Media organisations’ reports delivered at the meeting showed that over the past years, the media had participated in disseminating information on anti-corruption policies and laws, covering and even helping discover corruption cases.

However, several reporters abused information about corruption cases, leading to the violation of citizens’ privacy while some papers published wrong information, resulting in bad public opinions.

The committee indicated in its report that more than 8,600 inspections conducted in Vietnam during 2007 have detected frauds of over VND2.8 trillion and US$1.24 million.

Following the inspections, punishment was also proposed for more than 1,460 officials and public employees.
