State President Nguyen Minh Triet has called on the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) and the global alliance for mine action (GAMA) to continue with humanitarian initiatives and projects in Vietnam, contributing to the development of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Triet made the statement while receiving VVAF official Peter Goldmark and GAMA chief executive officer Gilonne d’ Origny in Hanoi on October 17. The two US guests attended an international conference on climate change in Hanoi from October 13-15.

He noted that Vietnam is one of the countries which will suffer from far-reaching consequences of climate change. The Vietnamese Government has launched campaigns to raise people’s awareness about climate change and environment protection. In addition, Vietnam has actively participated in international conventions on climate change.

The State President also said that relations between Vietnam and the US have progressed in recent times and bilateral cooperation has expanded in all aspects.

He said that Vietnam experienced several wars in the past and many unexploded bombs and mines have not been defused, causing deaths and injuries to many people. He called on international organisations, including VVAF and GAMA, to join hands to clear unexploded mines and bombs in Vietnam.

Peter Goldmark and Gilonne d’Origny said that the conference on climate change, organised by the US-Vietnam Trade Council Education Forum, was a valuable chance for the two sides to share experiences in coping with global climate change.

Mr Goldmark said he hopes that Vietnam will take part in negotiations of a global agreement on climate change in 2009 and play an important role in the process. He affirmed that US businesses want to help Vietnam develop industries and environmentally friendly products.
