A ceremony was held in Hanoi on August 1 to see off Vietnamese sports team to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games in August.

The Vietnamese team, led by Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, Hoang Vinh Giang, consists of 53 members. 21 out of them are athletes who will compete in nine events: taekwondo, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, athletics and wushu.

 

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem encouraged the team to try their best to achieve the highest results at the world’s biggest sports event.

 

 “Being a member of the Olympic movement for more than 30 years, Vietnam will put in a great deal of effort to uphold the objectives of the Olympics,” said Mr Khiem.

 

On behalf of the participating athletes, badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh, vowed to do their utmost to bring home the highest results.

 

The Manulife Insurance Company granted Nguyen Tien Minh a scholarship worth VND100 million while Dong Luc Group gave VND100 million to the Vietnamese team and promised to reward each gold medallist with VND200 million, each silver medallist with VND100 million and each bronze medallist with VND50 million.
