Fresh bird flu outbreaks have been detected in Bac Giang province and Hai Phong city, bringing the total number of the epidemic-affected localities to eight, according to the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on May 25.

Blood samples taken from bird flocks in the two new localities have tested positive for the deadly virus H5N1, said the department.

In the past week, bird flu recurred in six cities and provinces, namely Son La, Nam Dinh and Quang Ninh in the north, Nghe An in the central and Can Tho and Dong Thap in the south.

In another dispatch dated May 25, the Prime Minister asked local People’s Committees, relevant ministries and agencies to take immediate measures to prevent the recurrence of bird flu and avian influenza A.
