A number of activities for overseas Vietnamese will be held from mid-July to mid-September, according to Tran Quang Hoan, deputy head of the National Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA).

The 2006 Summer Camp will be held in the three regions from July 18 to August 2, with the participation of 44 young overseas Vietnamese selected from 20 countries. In addition to tours of historic relics and landscapes, this year’s camp will increase exchanges between young overseas Vietnamese and their peers in the country and organise workshops on the national history and culture; Vietnam, its people, and President Ho Chi Minh; the situation of Vietnamese nationals abroad and present-day Vietnamese youths.

Notably, participants will join the Green Summer Voluntary Campaign to be launched by the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union.

Mr Hoan said as from 2006, COVA will organise another summer camp themed “Tracing to the Roots” to encourage overseas Vietnamese who want to return and visit the homeland. Most of the spending will be voluntarily contributed by overseas Vietnamese. The first camp will be held in the three regions from August 5-20. More than 30 Vietnamese nationals residing in six countries have registered to participate in the event.

As many as 100 overseas Vietnamese entrepreneurs are expected to attend a conference in central Da Nang city on September 21-22 to fully tap the potential of the overseas Vietnamese business community in the process of national construction and development. The conference, the first of its kind, will make participants further understand Party and State policies and encourage entrepreneurs them to the homeland.

According to Mr Hoan, the conference will be of great significance, particularly when Vietnam is on the threshold of WTO accession, as overseas Vietnamese entrepreneurs serve as a bridge between domestic and foreign business circles.

The Mobilisation Board on the establishment of the Overseas Vietnamese Entrepreneurs Association will make its debut on this occasion.

To mark the National Day (September 2), a delegation of 40 overseas Vietnamese from Laos, Thailand and Cambodia who have rendered great services to the nation, will return to the homeland, where they will visit historic relics in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City.
