Vietnam will establish a repository for stem cells from umbilical cord blood and umbilical cord membrane to treat serious diseases, said Prof. Dr. Pham Manh Hung, Head of the Immunology Faculty of the Military Medicine University (under the Ministry of Defence).

Mr Hung told delegates at a conference in Hanoi on March 9 that the bank, named Mekostem, is a joint project of scientists and businesses in the country.

The annual conference, entitled “Inter-institute Annual Day on Immunology Teaching and Researching,” drew the participation of various scientists and lecturers from universities and institutes across Vietnam as well as experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China and others.
