More than 1,000 students from 40 universities and colleges participated in a blood donation drive launched in Hanoi on November 16.

The campaign, the largest of its kind by the Hanoi Students’ Association, aimed to
mark the association’s 20th anniversary and prepare for its coming 4th congress scheduled for early 2009.

According to statistics, thousands of people in Hanoi get involved in charitable blood donation campaign every year. Organizers collected 33,560 units of blood last year and they expect to collect around 50,000 units this year. Notably, 80 percent of the donated blood comes from students.

As the Lunar New Year Festival draws near, the demand for blood reserves to help patients at hospitals are increasing. It is hoped that the drive will collect a large volume of blood to supply the National Institute for Hematology and Blood Transfusions and hospitals in Hanoi.
