Vietnam takes note of the conduct over the past six months of the first phase of negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Ambassador Bui The Giang, deputy representative of Vietnam at the UN Security Council, made the statement at the Council’s advisory meeting on the Cyprus situation held in New York on April 30.

He spoke highly of the recent progress on confidence-building measures and the vigorous efforts undertaken by leaders of the two communities to continue to move the negotiations forward with a view to reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.

The diplomat welcomed the decision made recently by the Cypriot President, Mr. Demetris Christofias, to open ports and airports in the southern Greek half of the partitioned island to commercial Turkish Cypriot traffic.

“This decision and similar acts of good-will from both sides can help promote the mutual trust between the two communities and provide them with a renewed impetus to overcome remaining obstacles in order to achieve their common objective of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality,” Giang said.

He also shared the sense of cautious optimism as well as the comment of the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser Alexander Downer that it’s the two leaders and people of the two communities that will decide their own destiny.

The ambassador called upon both sides to maintain the present momentum to foster an environment conducive to moving the process forward, particularly through fully engaging in continued and substantive negotiations toward an early solution.

He also commended the enduring and productive efforts undertaken by UNFICYP and supported its vital role in cultivating the reunification process.
