A Baptist World Alliance (BWA) delegation, led by BWA President David Coffey, worked with the Government Committee for Religious Affairs and the Fatherland Front in Hanoi on May 16 as part of their week-long visit to the country.

Vietnamese officials introduced the State’s religious policies to the delegation, affirming that religious freedom is well protected in the Constitution and under the law, particularly in the Ordinance on Religions and Beliefs.

They also said the State acknowledged the close-knit traditional relations between religions and countries. During the renewal process, religious followers have contributed a lot to the country’s achievements.

Openness, harmony, solidarity and closeness are being increasingly strengthened between non-religious people and religious followers, the Vietnamese officials said.

The delegation was briefed on the situation of Protestants in Vietnam, especially the implementation of tasks under the Prime Minister’s directive on Protestantism.

The directive aims to bring their religious activities in line with the law and encourage clerics and followers to be faithful believers and good citizens.

Mr Coffey expressed his good impressions of and warm sentiments for Vietnam. He also said the delegation cared a lot about Protestants, including Baptists, in Vietnam.

The BWA is a major Protestant organisation, boasting 100 million followers in 200 nations.

The delegation will also visit HCM City before wrapping up their visit in May 22.
