US Chargé d'Affaires in Vietnam Jonathan M. Aloisi has praised the Vietnamese Government’s anti-corruption efforts and said the US is ready to help Vietnam in this field.

In an article published on December 22, Mr Aloisi highlighted specific activities to fight corruption conducted by the Vietnamese Government in 2006, such as establishing the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption headed by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, allowing legal agencies to investigate or prosecute State officials without the Party’s approval and banning the use of the State budget to buy gifts for high-ranking officials.

The move is in line with the multilateral anti-corruption agreements including
the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) signed by the Vietnamese and US Governments, said Mr Aloisi.

After two years of negotiation, the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) has officially come into effect since December 2005, drawing the participation of 140 nations around the world.

Mr Aloisi also expressed hope that Vietnam will finalise procedures for approval of the UNCAC soon and that Vietnam and the US will work together more effectively to combat corruption.
