The National Tourism Year in South Central Coastal region – Phu Yen 2011, themed “Exotic Beaches and Islands” will kick off in Tuy Hoa City, Quang Nam province, on April 1.

The organising board said on March 16 that in addition to a parade and opening ceremony, the year will witness more than 30 cultural, sports and tourism events taking place in south-central coastal provinces in 2011.

It chose People’s Artist Le Ngoc Cuong – former head of the Performance Arts Department – as the director of a programme to mark the 400th anniversary of Phu Yen and the opening ceremony.

The year will be co-hosted by Phu Yen and six other south-central coastal provinces of Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.

The region has great potential for developing beach and island tourism and promoting tangible and intangible cultural heritages as well as Viet-Cham culture.

The event will provide a good chance for visitors to discover the splendid beauty of the beaches and islands in the south-central coastal region and for Vietnam to promote beach and island tourism to its international friends.

It is also a good opportunity for the region to promote investment, attract more visitors and make full use of tourism’s potential, contributing to boosting socio-economic development and developing the tourism sector for the future.
