The opening of the Hanoi branch will enable the SMBC to meet the increasing needs of customers. Its HCM City Branch opened in 2006 and signed a business and capital alliance agreement with the local Vietnam Export-Import Commercial Joint Stock Bank in 2007.

The new bank, located on the 11^th floor of the Pacific Place Building at No 83 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, was licensed on November 4, 2008 by the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam.
