Drug addicts have the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infections in Vietnam, said Deputy Minister of Health Trinh Quan Huan at a conference to discuss the current epidemic in Asia held in Hanoi on May 20.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Vietnam is concentrated within high-risk groups including drug addicts, prostitutes, and men having sex with men (MSM), said Mr Huan.

By March 31, Vietnam had 123,775 people living with HIV, of whom 26,214 developed full blown AIDS. As many as 38,648 people also died of the deadly disease.

Among the infections, 78.9 percent were aged between 20-39. Quang Ninh province had the highest rate of infections, standing at 54.5 percent compared to the national average level of 28.6 percent. It was followed by HCM City (47.6 percent), Hai Phong City (46.25 percent) and Can Tho (45 percent.)
