Vietnam’s socio-political situation remained stable in the first five months of this year despite various difficulties, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at a regular Government meeting on June 2.

The PM said there were a number of areas reporting high growth, particularly agricultural production, during the Cabinet’s regular monthly meeting. He highlighted the strong possibility of producing bumper crops in the agricultural sector.
Exports and foreign investment have increased sharply, the government leader said, adding that Vietnam is set to achieve its 7-percent economic growth target this year.

The PM asked ministries, agencies and localities to put in place measures to curb inflation and to boost production and economic development.

He said the trade deficit in the first five months reached more than US$14.4 billion, higher than last year, adding that localities should speed up the implementation of major projects to improve production and living conditions, he said.
In addition, more attention should be paid to improving the standard of living for poor households, flood victims and people in mountainous and remote areas, the PM said.
He urged a greater effort to push through administrative reform and fight corruption and illegal activity.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment’s report indicated that industrial production was estimated at VND271 trillion in the first five months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 16.4 percent. Agricultural production developed steadily despite natural disasters and epidemics.

Additionally, retail sales and service revenues reached VND368.9 trillion, an increase of 29.7 percent from the same period last year, and the tourist sector registered a growth of 43.7 percent in its service revenue.

The five-month export value recorded nearly US$23.4 billion, up 27.2 percent from the same period last year, and foreign direct investment reached US$3.95 billion, a year-on-year increase of 25.4 percent.

Reports from 28 ministries and agencies, 43 cities and provinces and eight economic groups showed that around 995 projects valued at more than VND3.98 trillion had been halted, suspended or rescheduled by the end of May.
During the Cabinet meeting, the government also discussed various reports on the results of anti-corruption fight, inspection and administrative reform.
