Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung reaffirmed the Government’s determination to combat corruption and wastefulness and strive to fulfill socio-economic tasks set for the 2006-2010 period during the question time of the current National Assembly session on March 31.

“The fight against corruption is not only the task of the Steering Board on Corruption Prevention and Control, but also the determination of the entire political system and population,” said Mr Dung.

He said the fight will not be successful unless leaders of local administrations show their determination and take the lead in the fight.

“This fight is difficult, but we do not feel lonely because we receive warm support from our people. We believe that we will gradually curb this phenomenon,” said Mr Dung.

The Government leader said that two of the eight key graft scandals had been brought to court and the remainders will be tried very soon. He also assured NA deputies that these cases will be tried in an open and lawful manner and that law-breakers will be dully punished.

Regarding complaints that compensations from land clearance for constrcution projects are lower than market levels, Mr Dung said that land is the common property of the entire population represented by the State. The State has the right to decide on the purpose of land use, allocation, leasing and transferring, as well as price fixing. Though land prices are calculated closer to market levels, they still need several adjustments.

“It is a difficult task and the Government is issuing decrees to tackle the problem,” said Mr Dung.

In his speech before the legislature, Mr Dung spoke of the State management of public houses, implementation of housing development programmes and the construction of national key projects. He said he had asked central and southern provinces to overcome the consequences of oil leaks and assigned the National Committee for Search and Rescue to identify causes and coordinate with relevant ministries and sectors to tackle the issue.

He also asked Cabinet members to continue to answer deputies’ questions of voter concern in papers.
