Thai general election pushed back to August 2016
Thailand’s general election planned for early 2016 will be delayed until August at the earliest, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam announced on May 19.
The country will convene a referendum in January 2016 and spend 3-4 months amending various laws, he said, adding that the election will be held within no more than subsequent 90 days.
Earlier the same day, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said the cabinet has agreed to conduct a referendum on the new constitution and the military’s democracy restoration blueprint.
The progress of the return to democracy is forecast to be slower as a result of the three-month referendum, he conceded.
