A pre-summit workshop entitled Television Scheduling Strategies and New Media Content was held on May 21 at the Hanoi Melia Hotel as part of the 8th Asia Media Summit (AMS8).

The workshop was co-organised by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), the CFI Media Corporation and the French Government.

Participants discussed issues related to television broadcasting including air time, the strictness of laws, rules and regulations on television programming content, budgets for channel, advertising and whether a channel should produce its own or import foreign programmes.

David Botbol, the Deputy Managing Director for Sports and News Magazines at France Television, , introduced different ways to transmit and receive television via hertzian, satellite, internet-ADSL, cable, and digital terrestrial and mobile devices, which has  increased the number of new channels considerably.

However, the growing number of new channels has caused a decrease in the amount of money a television channel can earn from advertising. Therefore, channels must carefully select their content and decide if they want to buy programmes from other broadcasters, he added.

He also laid out digital strategies for television aimed at different audiences such as the general public, families, young people and ethnic groups.

Workshop participants pointed out the differences between offering a linear television schedule which enables viewers to watch content live on their computers, televisions and mobile phones and a nonlinear programming that can offer audiences on demand television programmes.

They stressed that television content should focus on young people as they are the most important customers with the most advanced technology to access most channels simultaneously whenever they want. They said that television channels should catch up with new internet trends and offer their content through in some popular social networks and blogs such as Facebook and Twitter.

Francoise Tassera, Director of FTA Media, said that television channel should also have interesting websites to attract audiences. It should consist of not only what the channel broadcasts, but also other kinds of entertainment such as games and music.

A media channel should be available on multiple platforms. An online newspaper should have video and audio content and conversely, a television station should develop online content, she added.
