National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairperson Tong Thi Phong on March 28 received a delegation from the Norwegian Parliament’s Committee for Family and Cultural Affairs, headed by Gunn Karin Gjul, who is visiting Vietnam from March 25-30.

Ms Phong spoke highly of the significance of the Norwegian delegation’s visit, which coincided with bilateral activities to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

She expressed satisfaction at the new developments in friendship and cooperation between the two governments, parliaments, and peoples, especially since Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet’s official visit to Norway.

The NA Vice Chairperson thanked the Norwegian government and people for their valuable assistance for Vietnam during its past struggles for national independence and unification and its current process of socio-economic development and international integration.

Ms Phong expressed hopes that in the near future, Norway will prioritize assistance for Vietnam in coping with climate change, forestation and forest protection, and developing clean and renewable energy. In addition, she said, Norway should encourage its businesses to step up trading with Vietnam, and help Vietnamese goods penetrate the North European market.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Storting’s Committee for Family and Cultural Affairs, Gunn Karin Gjul, said she was pleased to visit Vietnam which has given her many good impressions. She also highly appreciated Vietnam’s achievements, especially in poverty reduction.

Ms Gjul pledged to further strengthen ties between the two countries and two parliaments. She hoped that Norway will be able to assist Vietnam in dealing with climate change, rising sea levels, and coping with natural calamities.
