Vietnam came first at the Southeast Asian Age-Group Chess Championships with a total of 75 gold, 29 silver and 39 bronze medals after a week of competition.

The team beat Singapore, who came second with 12 golds, 23 silvers and 17 bronzes to be followed by the Philippines with eight gold, 10 silver and 23 bronze medals.

After dominating the blitz and standard events early this week, the Vietnamese teens kept pressure on rival players in the rapid chess category on June 21.

Trio Le Huu Thai, Pham Nguyen Hoang Duy and Tran Tuan Minh tied for first place in the boy's singles under 10 category with 5.5 points after seven games. They also pocketed the gold in the team event.

Young stars Tran Tuan Minh and his teammates Nguyen Tran Ngoc Thuy, in the under 12 division, and Hoang Thi Nhu Y, playing in the under 14 group, won six gold medals each.
