Trade between Vietnam and Russia reached US$240 million in the first three months of the year, according to preliminary data from the Europe Department under the Ministry of Finance.

Vietnam’s exports to Russia totalled US$100 million while its imports from Russia amounted to US$140 million.

The department said these figures are positive in the context of recent measures by Russian officials to tighten food hygiene standards and monitor Vietnamese goods.

Russia has also become the largest single importer of Vietnamese pineapples as it imported US$400,000 worth of pineapples from Vietnam last month, equivalent to 29.4 percent of the latter's total pineapple exports.

In January and February, Vietnam imported petroleum products worth US$40.2 million from Russia, while its steel, fertilizer and car imports fell by 40, 52, and 80 percent respectively.

In 2006, Vietnamese exports to Russia grew by 60 percent to hit US$400 million.
