After five days of working with a high sense of responsibility, the 28th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) concluded on August 23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

AIPA issued joint communiqué, dealing with many important issues in a move towards a close-knit inter-parliamentary assembly, which operates effectively and practically.

The AIPA General Assembly approved 48 resolutions, including two initiated by Vietnam on supporting the ASEAN Chapter and establishing a dialogue “channel” to exchange information between AIPA and ASEAN. ASEAN is forming a single community based on the three major pillars: security, economics and socio-culture.

AIPA appointed Mamud bin Ahdam (Malaysian) its General Secretary. It also adopted resolutions on strengthening co-operation among parliaments in the fields of environment pollution, epidemic and natural disaster prevention, human resources training, narrowing the gap between rich and poor, free emigration, and education co-operation.

In his closing speech, Malaysia’s Chairman of the House of Representatives Tan Sri Diraja Ramli bin Ngah Talip who is also AIPA chairman said the 28th AIPA General Assembly concluded successfully, showing the strong determination of all member countries in the process of regional and international integration and development.

The 28th AIPA chairman Ramli bin Ngah Talipb, officially passed the role of the 29 AIPA chairman to the head of the Singaporean delegation. The 29th AIPA will be held in Singapore at almost the same time next year.
